John Shepherd-Barron, the man who invented the ATM, has died after a short illness, aged 84. Barron, who was born in India to Scottish parents in 1925 .He is survived by his wife, three sons and six grand children .The world's first ATM was installed in a branch of Barclays in Enfield, North London. John Shepherd Barron, who worked for the printing firm De La Rue was the chief inventor.
In a Barclays press release, the bank stated that comedy actor Reg Varney, star of TV sitcom "On the Buses", became the first person in the country to use a cash machine at Barclays Enfield on June 27th 1967 The ATMS were at that time called DACS for De La Rue Automatic Cash System. John Shepherd Barron was the managing director of De La Rue Instruments, the company which made the first ATMS.
At that time plastic ATM cards did not exist. John Shepherd Barron's ATM machine took checks that were impregnated with carbon 14, a slightly radioactive substance. The ATM machine would detect the carbon 14 mark and match it against a pin number. Shepherd-Barron credited his wife with the idea for a four-digit PIN code after first toying with the use of a six-digit security code. He told the BBC: "Over the kitchen table, she said she could only remember four figures, so because of her, four figures became the world standard." He did not patent his system and did not make any money from his invention.There are now more than 1.7 million ATMs across the globe, according to the ATM Industry Association.

Microsoft has always offered training resources for consumers. According to a press release, they want to train 2 million people in basic tech skills. This is part of a 3-year initiative called “Elevate America”. The Elevate America program comes in two parts. One is aimed at helping helping people get free technical training and certification, and is more formal in nature. The other is available online and is aimed at teaching simpler skills, such as writing email and using the internet.

1. With Internet Explorer, navigate to http://www.microsoft.com/elevateamerica.

Engelbart first started making notes for the mouse in 1961, after deciding that he could do better than the standard gadget, a light pen which had been used on radar systems during the Second World War. 'We had a big heavy tracking ball - it was like a cannonball,' he said. 'We had several gadgets that ended up with pivots you could move around. We had a light panel you had to hold up right next to the screen so the computer could see it. And a joystick that you wiggle around to try to steer things.

Onion Map has a great collection of interactive 3D maps of some of the most world’s popular cities.It provides a 3D interactive map of all the major cities across the world.
You can zoom in and out; check out restaurant, shops, and hotel locations; plus find out random facts about a city, such as population, the phone code and the currency.It’s an international map service but it still has a limited amount of cities, although at least they’re all fairly well distributed around the world. Hopefully more cities will be added in time to cover more destinations.

The International Olympic Committee has launched a YouTube channel to broadcast clips from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games that will be accessible in most countries, but not in the United States.
The IOC announced Monday that a selection of clips will air in 77 countries -- in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East -- beginning Wednesday. Viewers can watch the clips on demand where digital video-on-demand rights have not been sold or acquired for exclusive airing. General Electric's NBC conglomerate has secured the broadcast rights for the Olympics in the United States.
The IOC said that its broadcasting services would regularly provide updated content, including highlights, news, and daily clips during the 17 days the games are held. The content will be geo-blocked in each territory.

Google says that it will allow multiple people to create Knols on the same subject. Knol allows users to rate and review Knols, and will likely include ranking as part of search results so we don’t have to sift through countless articles on the same topics. The Vista Compatibility Center, launched Tuesday at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference In Houston, is designed to let PC users verify whether their systems, peripherals, and applications will work properly with Microsoft's most current operating system.
Microsoft still feels that they need to get people to check for Vista compatibility in case they wish to upgrade from Windows XP."Through this new compatibility tool, Microsoft will work to solicit continuous feedback from consumers and partners to ensure that their purchase and adoption experience remains positive long after their migration to Windows Vista," the company said in a statement.
The idea was to offer a Web site where consumers and small businesses could easily check whether their hardware and software are Vista-ready. Since yesterday afternoon, however, the site has greeted visitors with the message "The Windows Vista Compatibility Center will be launching soon, please check back!"
