How long have you been sitting by your computer everyday? How often do you work by your PC every day?Too much time in front of a computer screen can lead to eye discomfort, fatigue, blurred vision and headaches. In addition to this  eyes may lose the ability to focus on other objects because of extended computer time.800px-Eye_iris

Focusing up close for any long period of time has temporary effects on our eyes. For starters, when we focus up close, our blink rate slows down. The average person blinks about 20 times every minute during normal activity. Blink rates slow down to less than half that when we are focused intently on anything up close, this includes the computer screen.

The following are a list of the common signs and symptoms of eye strain:

  • Sore, tired, burning or itching eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Headache
  • Difficulty shifting focus between monitor and paper documents in your work area
  • Color fringes or afterimages when you look away from the monitor
  • Increased sensitivity to light

How to tackle this?Try Eyes Relax .It  is a little free Windows utility that reminds you about rest-time and save your eyesight. This software allows you to customize the duration of your work time and length of breaks. During the break you may exercise your eyes, look away or look at distant objects either in your office or outside, take a stroll outside your office.

Parent mode available in the new version can be used to protect your children, forcing them to take breaks.  This is very useful since children often forget about the real world and play video games much too long

Tips To Avoid Eye Strain

• Get your eyes checked to ensure you’re using the right prescriptive glasses or contacts for your eyes – you may find you need to use glasses when working at a PC but not for any other activities.
• Reposition your desk and PC at a comfortable height and angle to make reading easy and your body comfortable – your eyes should be level with or just above the top of the computer screen so you look slightly downwards at your work.
• Make sure your desk has adequate lighting that does not create a glare you’re your screen or shine into your eyes (so don’t place your PC in front of a window), and sit upright looking at the screen straight-on.
• If necessary, you can get a non-glare filter for the computer screen to reduce glare
• Take regular breaks to stretch, get up and move around, or simply look away from your screen and watch something further away to rest your eye muscles. Do this at least once every half hour to allow your eyes to refocus and relax.
• Drink lots of water to prevent headaches and dry eyes.
• Keep the room hydrated by working with a window open or use a humidifier.
• Try to alternate computer work with other jobs to prevent too much time staring at the screen.
• Use a document holder to place any documents you are using at the same level as the screen – this prevents your eyes having to constantly adjust to focus on different angles and distances.

  1. The palming exercise will teach you to relax your eyes, which in turn will bring healthy energy to your eyes.

First, rub your hands together until they feel warm (about 15 to 20 seconds). Then place your cupped hands over your closed eyes, being careful not to touch your eyes with the palms of your hands. The fingers of each hand should overlap and rest gently on the center of your forehead. Don't create any unnecessary pressure on your face. If your arms get tired, rest your elbows on a table.

Sit quietly for one to two minutes with your hands over your eyes. The more relaxed you become, the blacker the darkness you will see with your eyes closed.
