Today (30th November ) is observed as Computer security Day all over the world. With computers occupying more and more important role in daily life, we are becoming more and more dependent on the use of information technology to carry out our duties.Computer Security Day was started in 1988 by the Association for Computer Security Day to help raise awareness of computer-related security issues and to remind people how important it is to protect their computers and information.
Every year there is a theme for the Computer Security day. This year's theme is "Managing Risk". IT risk cannot be controlled totally by deployment of technology. Technology has to be supported by Human efforts for IT Security to be effective.
With the increased networking , the spread of malware has also increased drastically. There are threats such as malicious or criminal actions, employee error, system failure, natural disaster, and lack of proper security infrastructure.Security is not the job of a single person or a group of persons. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us.Computer Security Day provides an opportunity for information security professionals worldwide to raise awareness of computer- and network-related security issues among their users.
If you bought a previously owned computer, there is a good chance that Windows still says it is registered to its former owner. To remove that name and insert your own, you must edit the Windows Registry:
1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of Windows.
2. Click Run.
3. A window will appear.Type regedit in the blank, and then click the OK button or press the Enter key.
4. The Windows Registry Editor opens. In the left window pane, double click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key. If you can’t find it, do the following
a. In the left window pane of the Registry Editor, scroll to the top.
b. If any of the HKEY registry keys are open—as indicated by a minus sign (-) on their left side—then close them by clicking that minus sign. When a registry key has been properly closed, it will have a plus sign (+) next to it.
c. Repeat this process for the remaining HKEY registry keys until the only things visible in the left window pane are the five HKEY keys
d. Double-click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key.
5. A new column of registry keys appears. Double-click Software.
6. A long column of registry keys will appear. Scroll down until you find Microsoft, and then double-click it.
7. Another long list of registry keys appears. Scroll down and double click Windows NT.
8. Click the CurrentVersion registry key.
9. In the right window pane, double-click the RegisteredOwner registry value
10. A window opens. Under the Value Data heading is the name of the previous owner. Delete it, and then type your name in the blank.
11. Click the OK button.
12. Above RegisteredOwner, double-click the registry value named RegisteredOrganization
13. Under the Value Data heading is the name of the previous owner’s employer or organization. Delete it, and then type the name of your organization (or you can just leave it blank if you want).
14. Click the OK button.
15. Exit the Registry Editor by clicking the X button in the upper-right corner.
Researchers at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University have developed a camera with a layout similar in size and shape of the human eye.
Borrowing one of nature's best designs, U.S. scientists have built an eye-shaped camera using standard sensor materials and say it could improve the performance of digital cameras and enhance imaging of the human body.
Huang, who worked on the project with John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, developed a relatively simple solution to the long-running problem of transferring microelectronic components onto a curved surface without breaking them.
The device might even lead to the development of prosthetic devices including a bionic eye, they said
"If you simply bend it, those materials are brittle like a ceramic bowl. They break," Huang said in a telephone interview.
To solve this, Huang and Rogers developed a mesh-like material made up of tiny squares that hold the photodetectors and electronic components. The squares are connected by tiny wires that give each component the ability to mold to a curved surface.
"This approach allows us to put electronics in places where we couldn't before," Rogers said in a statement.
Currently when you take photos, the middle part of the picture is very clear but when you go to the edge, it is not so clear," Huang said. "The curved technology will make the entire picture clear."
But the applications extend beyond taking better vacation photos.
"It really extends to all of the electronics that we use on humans. You want to have a curved surface to fit the human body. That is really the place it can be used," he said.
Huang said the device could be used to make better imaging equipment, such as curved sensors to monitor brain activity that follow the contours of the brain. It could even be used in the development of an artificial retina or a bionic eye.
"If you want to develop an eye to replace a human eye, certainly you want the shape to look like a human eye," he said.
"Right now we've already got a camera working. It works very well with computers. It's just how to connect the camera to the brain. That is the issue to be solved," he said.
Next Tuesday (August 12th), Microsoft will ship 12 security bulletins with fixes for serious vulnerabilities in a wide range of of widely deployed products.
Seven of the 12 bulletins will be rated “critical,” Microsoft’s highest severity rating.
The critical patches affect Windows, Internet Explorer, Access, Windows Media Player and Microsoft Office. Updates for Office, which has kept Microsoft busy with security updates lately, include individual patches for PowerPoint and Excel.

HSBC, the UK’s largest bank, lost an unencrypted data disc containing the names and insurance information of 370,000 customers. HSBC sent the disc via unregistered postal mail because its usual method of secure electronic data transmission “wasn’t working.” Network World reports the bank’s response: “The data, which was password-protected, includes names, life insurance cover levels, dates of birth and whether or not a customer smokes. There is nothing else that could in any way compromise a customer and there is no reason to suppose that the disc has fallen into the wrong hands,” the bank said in a statement. “We don’t normally send information on hard copy, but usually send electronically through this secure network.
