Indian Govt plans to introduce the tablet in early 2011 and, taking into account the mass production is expected to lower the price of the device to ten dollars. Two variants of this device will  be available . John Shepherd-Barron, the man who invented the ATM, has died after a short illness, aged 84. Barron, who was born in India to Scottish parents in 1925 .He is survived by his wife, three sons and six grand children .The world's first ATM was installed in a branch of Barclays in Enfield, North London. John Shepherd Barron, who worked for the printing firm De La Rue was the chief inventor.

In a Barclays press release, the bank stated that comedy actor Reg Varney, star of TV sitcom "On the Buses", became the first person in the country to use a cash machine at Barclays Enfield on June 27th 1967 The ATMS were at that time called DACS for De La Rue Automatic Cash System. John Shepherd Barron was the managing director of De La Rue Instruments, the company which made the first ATMS.

At that time plastic ATM cards did not exist. John Shepherd Barron's ATM machine took checks that were impregnated with carbon 14, a slightly radioactive substance. The ATM machine would detect the carbon 14 mark and match it against a pin number. Shepherd-Barron credited his wife with the idea for a four-digit PIN code after first toying with the use of a six-digit security code. He told the BBC: "Over the kitchen table, she said she could only remember four figures, so because of her, four figures became the world standard." He did not patent his system and did not make any money from his invention.There are now more than 1.7 million ATMs across the globe, according to the ATM Industry Association.

Google recently   added a new way to catch up on Twitter's never-ending conversation: a timeline view through which you can replay old updates.It searches updates on Twitter, Facebook, Buzz, and MySpace. It is an attempt to recreate the conversation which occurred at a specific point in time about any topic.Tweets will be grouped by topic, and the format will allow users to see when tweet activity was highest for their search query. When a certain date is selected, the messages will pop up in the form of a scrolling list. The timeline looks something like a stock graph, showing spikes signifying moments of high Twitter activity on a particular topic.

Twitter has its own search page , the results are often grouped around trending topics, or simply lack any form of organization.If you have more tweets to your name, you can’t get to them all even though your are a registered  Twitter user.  But the Google program will work as a practical archive. For now, Google says that it will offer tweets going back to February 11, 2010 but will soon extend back to March 21, 2006.

Google launched a new service recently - Google Reader Play - that plays a slideshow of cool items from around the google_readerweb..It is a visual way to browse through the most popular items being saved and shared on Google Reader.It has video  and text , you can flip through by clicking on arrows or selecting an item from the filmstrip at the bottom of the  screen.This is an attempt to encourage more direct sharing and to capture that sharing data.     This new project is the first one to examine 'how memories manifest themselves in the brain, and how a brain stores specific pieces of data.' As life expectancy is increasing in most countries, this new research could provide insights into how the brain works and help aging people.

    In fact, the main goal of this project is to understand better the development of diseases and disorders which affect the brain such as Alzheimer or Parkinson diseases. It's interesting to note that this project is being led by Professor Kevin Warwick, who became famous in 1998 when a silicon chip was implanted in his arm to allow a computer to monitor him in order to assess the latest technology for use with the disabled.

    Rolling your eyes to turn up the volume of a portable music player and tapping your fingers to turn on a DVD player are among technologies Japan's top mobile carrier is testing for "wearable" gadgets.Mr Hiroyuki Manabe and he is currently employed by a Japanese based mobile company NTT DoCoMo.

    NTT DoCoMo believes wearable control technology will be adapted for mobile devices that download music, play video games and allow users to shop online and keep up with their e-mail.

    What Is Streaming?

    Streaming refers to the technique of continuous and steady digital
    data (audio, video, or graphics) transfer as “packets” in real-time
    from a data server through the Internet to a user’s computer. Media files can played in a browser using an embedded plugin or in a media player. The smoothness of the media stream depends upon the speed of the connection. Multiple versions in terms of quality high,medium, or low) can be made available for different connection speeds. For slow connections, glitches in frames and delayed or no audio will occur.

    A key factor is the compression method used for the media files so
    they can be streamed seamlessly.Due to compression, some data
    quality is compromised through perceptual encoding, that is, the
    audio/video is stripped down in such a way that the changes cannot
    be easily perceived. Usually, perceptual encoding refers to lossy audio
    encoding in which psychoacoustics is used to determine what audio signals to encode and what to snip out. Large media files are encoded
    using codecs to smaller sizes. Thus you have MOV, RM, etc.

    RealNetworks, QuickTime,Windows Media and Macromedia Flash are the most common streaming technologies.

    Types of Streaming

    Streaming is of two types—progressive and real-time.During progressive streaming, the media file can be viewed orlistened to while the file is in being downloaded. In the case of data loss, re-transmission of lost packets is possible. Media files streamed using the progressive technique get saved on the viewer’s hard drive,
    which raises the problem of redistribution. HTTP streaming is a
    type of progressive streaming where the media file begins to play
    before it is entirely downloaded. In the case of HTTP streaming, a
    request for data remains open even after the data is received by the
    client, so that the server can respond at any time.

    In real-time streaming, media content gets downloaded temporarily to the user’s computer. Almost-live broadcast of content is possible. Content streamed realtime can adjust according to the user’s  connection capacity; if the connection is too slow, the transmission
    of data would break.

    Media streams can also be distinguished as “on demand” or “live.” The former are stored on servers for long periods of time, becoming available to be transmitted to the user upon request. Live streams are available only at a particular time—like the streaming
    of a live TV broadcast. A streaming server software package, the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) to control the interaction,
    and a matching client is needed for real-time streaming.  

    It's every cyclist's nightmare - it's dark or getting that way, you have just given a hand signal, but will other road users have seen it? In order to increase the safety of the bike riders, a design student from London has envisioned a jacket by the name "Reactiv.

    This futuristic piece of clothing has an accelerometer built in to detect the speed at which the wearer is traveling. Secondly, there are LEDs placed on the back side of the sleeves. Thus, with the help of the accelerometer, these multi-colored LEDs flash green when the biker is accelerating and red when he or she is braking. Also, if the biker wants to take a turn, by simply waving his hand sideways, the LEDs glow orange, indicating the turn to the people behind.

    But don't panic, a sophisticated fix is on the way - and we could all be hooked up in the near-future.The internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.That means you can download heavy multimedia data such as movies, songs etc within seconds.

    The Grid will not only enable sharing of documents and MP3 files, but also connect PCs with sensors, telescopes and tidal-wave simulators.

    “We are extremely excited about our experiment. It is the biggest experiment in the world and we hope we are going to understand all sorts of things like the origin of mass and what is the dark matter in the universe,” said theoretical physicist Professor Malcolm Fairbairn at CERN.CERN has built Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which is the most powerful particle accelerator ever constructed. It took almost 15 years and $8 billion to construct for CERN. The LHC is located in a 27-km circular tunnel 100 metres below ground level outside Geneva on the Franco-Swiss border.

    The internet has evolved by linking together a hotchpotch of cables and routing equipment, much of which was originally designed for telephone calls and therefore lacks the capacity for high-speed data transmission.
    By contrast, the grid has been built with dedicated fibre optic cables and modern routing centres, meaning there are no outdated components to slow the deluge of data. The 55,000 servers already installed are expected to rise to 200,000 within the next two years.

    Super Fast Internet - the Grid 10,000 times faster the existing Internet

    That network, in effect a parallel internet, is now built, using fibre optic cables that run from Cern to 11 centres in the United States, Canada, the Far East, Europe and around the world.One terminates at the Rutherford Appleton laboratory at Harwell in Oxfordshire.From each centre, further connections radiate out to a host of other research institutions using existing high-speed academic networks.
    It means Britain alone has 8,000 servers on the grid system – so that any student or academic will theoretically be able to hook up to the grid rather than the internet from this autumn.Ian Bird, project leader for Cern’s high-speed computing project, said grid technology could make the internet so fast that people would stop using desktop computers to store information and entrust it all to the internet.
    “It will lead to what’s known as cloud computing, where people keep all their information online and access it from anywhere,” he said.
    Computers on the grid can also transmit data at lightning speed. This will allow researchers facing heavy processing tasks to call on the assistance of thousands of other computers around the world. The aim is to eliminate the dreaded “frozen screen” experienced by internet users who ask their machine to handle too much information.
    The real goal of the grid is, however, to work with the LHC in tracking down nature’s most elusive particle, the Higgs boson. Predicted in theory but never yet found, the Higgs is supposed to be what gives matter mass.
    The LHC has been designed to hunt out this particle - but even at optimum performance it will generate only a few thousand of the particles a year. Analysing the mountain of data will be such a large task that it will keep even the grid’s huge capacity busy for years to come.
    Although the grid itself is unlikely to be directly available to domestic internet users, many telecoms providers and businesses are already introducing its pioneering technologies. One of the most potent is so-called dynamic switching, which creates a dedicated channel for internet users trying to download large volumes of data such as films. In theory this would give a standard desktop computer the ability to download a movie in five seconds rather than the current three hours or so.
    Additionally, the grid is being made available to dozens of other academic researchers including astronomers and molecular biologists.
    It has already been used to help design new drugs against malaria, the mosquito-borne disease that kills 1m people worldwide each year. Researchers used the grid to analyse 140m compounds - a task that would have taken a standard internet-linked PC 420 years.
    “Projects like the grid will bring huge changes in business and society as well as science,” Doyle said.
    “Holographic video conferencing is not that far away. Online gaming could evolve to include many thousands of people, and social networking could become the main way we communicate.
    “The history of the internet shows you cannot predict its real impacts but we know they will be huge.”
