Reduce Your Errors in English Writing with ESL Assistant

English is today the third most widely distributed language as a first spoken language in the world, after Mandarin and Hindi.Because English is so widely spoken, it has often been referred to as a "global language", the lingua franca of the modern era .But  for communication , many people are not very comfortable as English  is not their native language.

The Microsoft Research ESL Assistant is a web service that provides correction suggestions for typical ESL (English as a Second Language) errors. Such errors include, for example, the choice of determiners (the/a) and the choice of prepositions. It also provides word choice suggestions from a thesaurus. In order to help the user make decisions on whether to accept a suggestion, the service displays "before and after" web search results so that the user can see real-life examples of the usage of both their original input and the suggested correction.

  • Paste or type some English sentences into the text box. The ESL Assistant will look for possible problems in your writing and indicate them with wavy green underlines
  • If you point your mouse at a section of text with a wavy green underline, the ESL Assistant will display some suggestions. This indicates a place that you might want to take another look at. (What you wrote may not necessarily be incorrect.)
  • Move your mouse to highlight a suggestion; the ESL Assistant will now search the World Wide Web to find real examples, so that you can compare the suggestion with what you wrote. You can then decide whether the suggestion matches what you are trying to say.
